A penis cage (chastity cage) is a locking control device. There is no published safe limit in hours, and our own cautious position is to wear it for a few hours, not days. Choose a material and a base ring that fit without squeezing, check the skin and its colour often, and keep the key somewhere you can reach quickly. If the penis becomes hard with a soft glans, the testicles swell or you feel pain, take it off and get help.
THE ESSENTIALS IN 30 SECONDS
- Consent first: a safeword, a clear agreement about the keyholder's role, and never use on another person without their own "yes".
- There is no published safe limit in hours. Start with a few hours, not days, and check in with yourself regularly.
- Signs to take it off: pain, swollen testicles, a change of colour, or a hard penis with a soft glans.
- Priapism (an erection lasting over four hours) is a medical emergency, according to the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM).
- Material and size: start with a set that has several rings, or an adjustable ring, and choose a ring that holds steadily without pain or numbness.
In the site chat, questions about the cage usually start with "how do you wear it?" and "does it hurt?". There is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is an adults-only (18+) product and it takes a little knowledge. Here you will find what it is, why couples choose it, how to pick one, how long to wear it and when to stop.
What a penis cage is and how it works
The penis cage encloses the penis in a casing and locks onto a base ring with a lock. While it is locked it does not come off without the key, and in the logic of the game, whoever holds the key holds the access. That person is called the keyholder.
Our own products show the usual build: the cage, one or more rings so you can find a fit, and a lock with two keys. The Obsidian Hold includes five rings of different sizes, the Mindnight Cell four, while the Chastity Depths 7.5 cm has one adjustable ring from 35 to 52 mm.
The cage is a play tool. It cures nothing, and whatever it does, it does because two people have agreed to it.
Why people choose it (and why consent is half the product)
For many people the reason is psychological. What works here is anticipation, trust, and the way one person hands over control while the other takes it on. The key becomes a symbol: what you hold in your hand is, playfully, the other person's desire. For many couples the pleasure is in the before, in the negotiation and in who decides when the lock opens.
This is about experience and preference, with no medical claim. We do not promise that it "fixes a relationship" or that it suits everyone. Some find it thrilling, others dull or awkward, and both are fine.
The rules we suggest are short:
- Talk before you buy: what each of you wants, for how long, and what you do not want at all.
- Agree a safeword or a hand signal. When it is used, the key turns at once, no discussion.
- The keyholder is always reachable while the cage is worn. A key in another city is not a game, it is a risk.
- Never a "punishment" that was not agreed beforehand. The ISSM stresses consent, clear communication and safewords or hand signals.
If the wider power dynamic interests you, see the femdom guide and the introduction to BDSM, which explains why people like it and how to start safely.
Materials and types: which one to pick
The table is based on what our product pages say. Where a page does not state the material, we do not guess.
| Product | Material | Base ring | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Hold Small | Durable plastic | 5 rings, 35 to 49 mm | Anyone who wants to try sizes |
| Mindnight Cell Medium | Durable plastic | 4 rings, 42 to 53 mm | A larger ring, internal lock |
| Chastity Depths 7.5 cm | Not stated on the page | One adjustable ring, 35 to 52 mm | Anyone who does not want to measure sizes |
| ManCage Model 28 | Flexible silicone | See the product page | Anyone who prefers a softer feel |
| Silver Lock Medium | Metal | One ring, 50 mm inner diameter | Experienced users, according to the page |
Our view: for a first time, start with something that lets you change the ring, meaning a set or an adjustable one. Metal is heavier and more "serious", and its own page recommends it to people who already know what they are doing.
How to choose a size
There is no universal size chart that fits every cage, because each design has its own shape. Look at two things: the dimensions of the cage (inner diameter and length) and the size of the base ring. Pages state the ring sizes, for example 35 to 49 mm on the Obsidian Hold Small.
The rule we follow in the shop is our own view, not medical guidance: the right ring holds the device steadily but does not hurt or go numb. If you feel tightness building or the skin changes colour, the ring is too small: take it off and try the next size up in the set. A ring that slips off is too big, so take the next size down.
Do the trial in your own time, not shortly before a date. Use a water-based lubricant when fitting it and do not force it to "fit".
On the first outing with the cage, wear it briefly and take it off. See how the skin looks and how you feel afterwards. You still hold the key.
How long, and when to take it off
Here the honest answer disappoints anyone who wants a number: in the medical sources we found, there is no published safe limit in hours for a cage. We will not give you a "safe time" that does not exist.
Our position, explicitly ours and not medical: start with a few hours, not days. Look at the skin and its colour, notice whether it hurts and whether there is swelling. For long-term use, ask a urologist.
The penis is hard or rigid while the glans (the tip) stays soft, or the testicles have swollen. This is the criterion given by the ISSM: it is likely time to stop and seek medical help. The same goes for pain, numbness or a colour that is not your usual. An erection lasting over four hours is an emergency, and the ISSM writes that it requires immediate medical intervention.
According to the same source, it is worth checking periodically how the penis and testicles feel. For any injury you watch both the pain and the time. If it hurts and time passes, you do not wait to "get used to it".
The "take it off immediately" signs for a plain cock ring are in the article on cock rings. There we talk about the ring, here about the whole device, which is worn for much longer.
What the research says (little, and with limits)
The literature on cages is thin. This is what we can support:
- The ISSM (Holly South, 19/08/2026, medically reviewed by its Communication Committee) mentions rare testicular rupture from intense pressure, and that lack of movement and blood flow may cause scrotal hypothermia.
- On fertility, the same source speaks of limited evidence that the testicle may get hotter than is safe for sperm production, and that the risk of infertility "may be associated". It does not prove that the cage causes infertility. If you are planning a child, ask a doctor before wearing one.
- There is also a published case report (Yazıcı et al., Haydarpaşa Numune Medical Journal 2026): a 32-year-old man with a penile hematoma after cage use, managed conservatively, who recovered fully within three weeks. The authors write that it highlights potential risks. One case does not tell you how common it is.
The ISSM does not cover who should avoid it, nor hygiene or size selection. For these our advice is our own: if you have a circulation condition or diabetes, a skin condition, or a history of priapism or injury in the area, ask a doctor first. It is not medical advice that replaces an examination.
Hygiene and care
We found no medical source on hygiene specific to cages, so we follow the instructions of the products themselves. The Obsidian Hold and Mindnight Cell pages ask for cleaning after every use with warm water and mild soap or a dedicated toy cleaner, and drying completely before storage.
We add two things: look at the skin for irritation when you take it off, and do not put the cage back on irritated skin. For a deeper clean there are toy cleaners. For fitting, water-based lubricants suit, and our cage pages recommend them. If your cage is silicone, see the article on water-based or silicone lubricant before you choose.
If it will not come off, or the key is lost
You prevent the problem before it happens: keep a spare key somewhere you know and can reach, or with the keyholder, and never leave the only one somewhere out of reach. Our sets come with two keys for this reason.
If it still will not open, stay calm and do not improvise with tools on the skin. If there is pain, swelling or discolouration, go to the emergency room and say what happened. They will not judge you, and in the emergency room they have ways to remove it.

Frequently asked questions
How is a penis cage worn? The penis goes into the casing relaxed, the base ring sits in the right place and the lock closes. A little water-based lubricant helps. If you have to push or hurt to make it fit, the ring is too small.
There is no published safe limit in hours. As our own cautious position: start with a few hours, not days, check skin and colour, and ask a urologist about long-term use.
We found no source that treats it as safe, so we do not recommend it. This is our own cautious position: asleep, you cannot watch for the signs. The ISSM, for its part, treats an erection lasting over four hours as a medical emergency.
It should not. Pain, numbness or a change of colour is a signal to take it off at once. The ISSM stresses watching both the intensity of the pain and the time.
There is limited evidence that the testicle may get hotter than is safe for sperm, according to the ISSM. It has not been proven, but if you are planning a child, ask a doctor first.
It helps with fitting, and our product pages suggest a water-based lubricant. With silicone you avoid silicone lubricant, because it wears the material down.
